Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a percent of selling price: (price − cost) ÷ price. Markup is profit as a percent of cost: (price − cost) ÷ cost. A $50 cost sold at $75 is a 33.33% margin and a 50% markup — same dollars, different base.
How do I find selling price from cost and margin?
Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). With a $100 cost and 25% margin, price = 100 ÷ 0.75 ≈ $133.33. Markup on that deal is about 33.33%.
Can I start from markup percent instead?
Yes. Price = cost × (1 + markup). A $80 cost with 50% markup sells for $120, which is a 33.33% margin.
Is this accounting or tax advice?
No. It is a retail math helper for cost, price, margin, and markup. It does not replace bookkeeping, tax, or financial advice.
